At Ladybird Studios we focus on ad-lib light shows that enhance the audience's experience whilst leaving the performers to entertain. We don't do highly complex scripted moving light shows, not because we can't but because that isn't our market. We don't see a need to buy, store, transport, maintain and programme more equipment than our market can support, and our charges reflect that.

The main scenarios where we would be involved are below

UN-SCRIPTED STAGE LIGHTING
This is the challenge where we excel. We provide lighting for small music festivals where:-
  • sometimes the stage and venue are complete unknowns with on-site pre-event meetings impractical. Repeat bookings to the same venue are a bonus.
  • often suitable power supplies are difficult to reach and sometimes not very stable
  • there is little opportunity to rehearse as we don't get set-lists or get to hear original compositions in advance.
  • the styles, genres, and technical competences of the artists can vary enormously
  • events are often staged outside during summer months so we are at the mercy of the Great British Weather and have to cater for ambient daylight / dusk / dark in the same show
  • anything can change or go wrong at the last minute but the show must go on

FILM
There are some technical norms taught in film-school that involve the positioning of master and support lighting to acihieve a particular mood or effect. We do that (when the film director can articulate what's needed). We can also create and operate many forms of special effects.

We also own and operate cameras, record sound, and turn it into something worth watching.

BASIC THEATRE
Theatre productions (usually) have a pre-defined script that forms the basis of how the technical support team make the show work. One technical 'scene' follows another with cues written into the script that trigger changes. In general, lighting events are pre-sequenced with sudden events (such as a flash of lightening) manually inserted as required. We have done that1, but generally don't because of the time and effort required for rehearsal and multiple repeat performances. We will provide simple background lighting such as house lighting2, or simple dynamic lights (such as an operated follow-spot3), on an ad-hoc basis for one-offs.

That said, if you were to ask very nicely and are local then we may change our minds
